Abstract Art

I love playing with colour and texture on canvas, pushing the paint around and finding the right balance and dance of colour and form on the canvas. See my abstract art page. As an exercise of self-expression and emotion, for me, abstract art allows you to explore, reveal and feel.

There are different ways to approach abstraction, looking at a flower or a landscape and then following the form, shape and colours in front of you,  allowing your emotional response to come through into the work, I sometimes work directly from an emotion or feeling and/or directly from a colour.

Activity - Create a piece of Abstract Art

1 x canvas (size of your choice)

Large flat paint brush and other paint brushes

Various objects to make marks on canvas for example; small piece of thick cardboard, sponge, art scrapers or knife, toothbrush

Feel free to approach this as you wish, but to get you going, choose one main colour as your focus. For example blue and then choose two other colours to work with this main colour, for example purples and oranges or yellows. Cover the canvas in your focus colour and allow it to dry.  Then using your other colours and various objects allow yourself to engage in the activity of playful or expressive painting. If you can, allow your feelings to take over, pushing the paint around, flicking paint with the toothbrush, scraping the paint across the canvas, sponging areas etc. Really just allow your imagination to take over and focus on building texture in paint and enjoy spreading colour. The use of white paint can be added at the end with a scraper or smaller brush to add highlights to your design. Try to engage, release and enjoy.
